Rant On The Film Industry

November 8, 2010

I am very excited for the upcoming Danny Boyle film 127 Hours. My friends, not so much. I don’t like how some people can’t appreciate a good movie. Now I’ll admit, I am a sucker for any new action movie, but I love any movie… What does that say about me?

Ever since I was 7 I loved movies, after seeing the first Jurrasic Park on HBO. After that I was always first in line for the next hit movie. I think some of that goes to the millions of DVD’s sitting around the house. I never really had a favorite movie until The Dark Knight came out (I ended up seeing it 6 times in the theaters). After that movie I started watching so many movies and fell in love with the film industry.

The movie industry has it’s flaws though. I hate movies based on video games, or anything from the directors of Meet The Spartans… and Transformers 2… and 10,000 BC… and The Last Airbender. The list can go on and on.

Critics are often too harsh on some films. For example, the movie Eagle Eye got awful reviews. Ignoring that, I went to see it, and I thought it was great. The action, plot, and dialogue were superb. Critics said bad things about it because they didn’t want to give the Transformers star a good movie, especially for Wall Street 2, which had a great script and performances by Michael Douglas and Shia LaBeuf. I think critics take these movies for granted…

I love modern day films. The effects, the camera shots, and the hip dialogue. For example, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World I one of the coolest movies I have ever seen. Director Edgar Wright knows how to make a graphic novel look good on the big screen. The shots and effects in that are what really catch my eye and make me feel good at the end. This is what the movie industry should be about, and not wasting $150,000,000 on 2012 or 10,000 BC (Roland likes spending money on terrible films).

Now when I criticize movies such as Transformers 2, it’s not because it’s not a cool movie to look at, it’s because [Michael Bay] doesn’t know how to write a script. I wouldn’t call myself a biased source to listen to for film reviews, but I usually don’t see movies below 30% on ‘Rotten Tomatoes,’ partly because that website combines all of the critics reviews and puts it on the fresh or rotten scale, which I like.

I dislike many actors, but personally, I think Nicolas Cage is now the worst actor in Hollywood. It was worse enough that they made a second National Treasure, but now he is starring in complete flops like Bankock Dangerous, The Sorcerers Apprentice, Knowing, The Wicker Man, and the list can go on for days. It also turns out he’s broke, I don’t know much information about that though. I am hoping that his new movie Drive Angry (3D) will be his big comeback. Face it, Americans are down for a movie with Nic Cage and (the sexy) Amber Head. Drive looks like an action packed ride that may be the key to his future success. Let’s hope I’m right. (I wasn’t right)

What is unfortunate is that good directors, like Danny Boyle, make movies every 2-3 years, while awful directors make another flop every six months. Elaborating on Boyle’s work, 28 Days Later, Trainspotting, Slumdog Millionare, those films are examples of what movies should be like these days; crisp dialogue, great camera work, and beautifully acted. And, if I may add, 28 Days Later is my favorite zombie of all time.

Well, there you have it. Now you know how screwed up the movie industry is. A lying, socially retarded system.

It was a great movie, Dylan. Many people couldn’t sit through it but I found it mesmerizing and simply magnificent cinematic achievement by director Danny Boyle. Thanks for reading, Dylan!
